asp.net and IE8 problem

I developed an asp.net site on my IIS server and it works fine within
VWD and VS2005 as well as in firefox, but in IE8 all the elements and
web controls that I had on the left sidebar do not show up. Anyone know
what might cause this.

Oh, I can see the controls if I change the browser setting to
compatibility mode, but then the rest of the web site goes all wacky. I
suspect that in compatibility mode, it does not have support for all the
css. I have my page designed around a tables page layout using css.
In compatibility mode the left and right columns are both on the left
side with the center content section on the left side.
