asynchat connection timeout

I'm using asynchat and I'm getting an error

error: (110, 'Connection timed out')

This is ok, but how do I set what the timeout is?

It is built on the socket module, which has these methods:

socket.getdefaulttimeout() -- get the default timeout value
socket.setdefaulttimeout() -- set the default timeout value
