authentication methods for web application over the public internet

Hi there

Please could someone point me to an article or other resource describing all
the various options for user authentication in an ASP.NET application run on
WS2003/IIS6 over the public internet. I'm particularly interested in the
mechanics of Microsoft's external connector license.
