Hence Mark's use of the word "usually" instead of "always".

In most cases background images make text less readable, though if the
image is low-contrast it shouldn't make too much of an impact and can
enhance the visual appeal of the site.

For example, go to my site and choose any of the last four options from
the "Art" style sheet selector box. These load up non-distracting (IMHO)
background images. (Though bear in mind that they're huge and slow the
site to a crawl!)

hi,
i'm trying to put a background image onto my html page, but the image should
be fixed, and should have the width and height of a browser (i need to
resize it).
how do i do that (with code)?

so far i've got: :)

<BODY background="back.jpg" bgproperties="fixed">

No. The only solution is to use a <img> for background with javascript
to adjust its size dynamically.

Totally depends on the image and it is used.

Which is why I said usually.
Not disagreeing with you, but your answers seem to imply you are
limiting what the background image is, how it is being used, and what
the page layout might be.

Fair point - I was thinking of background images that cover the entire
background of the page (which is what the OP was asking)
A background image with multiple sections and curves can make a site
look very intricate when it is really a simple layout.

Very true.

no, the problem is that, if i change the resolution, then it wouldn't
But my window is 1400 pixels wide! What am I going to do?

....I'm at 1600x1200... Don't I count?
