Black-out time before page actually loads

HI

When I point my browser to my site http://www.josvanriswick.nl I see a
black
page, before the page is actually shown. On slow connections, this is
really
annoying. I tried everything I know to speed this up: use small-size
and
low-quality images (high jpeg compression), not use too much images,
specify
all image sizes (height and width) in pixels in the <img> tag. Despite
these
actions, there still is a black time-out before the page is shown. What
is
the browser doing during this time? The effect seems to be the worst on

internet explorer. Firefox and mozilla work better... What can I do to
prevent
this? At least I'd like to show some text, so users know that something
is
being loaded...

Some things for you to consider.

1. 51 images on the main page. Waaay too many.
2. Many errors on the page:

3. Needs more optimization. Enter your URL here:

4. Add a proper DOCTYPE, preferably HTML 4.01 Strict.

It might be that seemingly unnecessary JavaScript. Remove that and see
what happens.

Why is your page so long? There are meters of blank space below the
last of the content?
