Checkbox in DataList not maintaining viewstate

Hi:

I have a checkbox inside an itemtemplate in a Datalist. The text property
is bound to a field in a table and the checked property is unbound. When
the form postsback, the checked property is alway false and when form
returns checked items are unchecked. Why isn't checked state participating
in viewstate?
