Confusion about control name visibility in code

I have an ascx which I am changing to take more advantage of web services
and ajax.

I have a table in one update panel. What I am doing is taking two rows from
a table in this update panel and adding them to a new update panel
containing a new table.

Now I just ran it and all was well. Now I go back to tweak the code and to
my surprise I see lots of errors. The one control in the table which I use
is now undefined as far as the VB.Net code and the @Control line in the
ascx.

There was no problem before so how by just moving some markup do I get this
problem. Is there some order that you have to follow to get it to work??
