Data Access Enterprise Library

Is it possible to keep a connection to the database open whilst using
the enterprise library Database methods like ExecuteDataSet(),
ExecuteScalar() etc in a loop without using transactions (or sprocs)?

Surely theres quite a perfomance hit connecting and disconnecting
otheriwise when in a largish loop??
