designing a monitoring and reporting framework with java

Hello NG.

I´m trying to design a monitoring framework. This framework should
handle certain tasks such as login, observing servers, notification
and a few other things. My question is if somebody has any relevant
information on designing such a framework(the framework should be held
as abstrakt as possible, so that plugins can be written for each
server type) or best practice patterns etc. Furthermore I would be
thankful for any literature hints concerning the development of such a
task or good links on this topic.
