Does anyone still play MUDs these days?

In this age of World of Warcraft, probably not eh?

I was thinking that writing a MUD client and server pair would be an
educational and fun (if not a little daunting) project in C. It would
be nice to think that maybe someday it could get to a point of
functionality that other people would play it also, and even add in-
game content. This would be just for fun- I'm not looking to get
rich.

But if nobody plays MUDs anymore, then maybe i'll just go back to the
original plan of writing single-player text adventures that nobody
will play. :p

Thanks.

Why not write it anyway? In the worst case you will gain a bit of invaluable experience, which is
always nice to have. Moreover, it will be quite possibly one of those "if you build it, they will
come" kind of thing, particularly if you release the source in a free software license.

In fact, maybe you could pick an existing roguelike game and fork it to your liking. For example,
there is this game called egoboo which already has decent graphics but if I'm not mistaken it
lacks support for proper network gaming. Why not build from there?
