Can a domain name be mapped onto any file whether its html, xml, asp or
    anything else?

A domain name is pointed at an ip address.
That ip address may run an HTTP server.
That HTTP server may serve any kind of content you like. That content might
be based on relating the URI to a file, or to something else entirely.
