Extracting tarball with Java

I think I have a fairly good idea how to extract a GZIP file but how would
one extract a gzipped tar file? Any pointers, links to docs, etc would be
appreciated.

Thanks,

No I meant do it in Java code. Not with an external program ( even if it is
itself written in Java). I'm looking for API methods to deal with TAR
files.

Please don't top post. I moved your reply.

The source code for Ant is open. Take a look at it and see how they do it.

Google.

perhaps a less flip answer would be, use exec to get one of the
standard tar utilities to do it.

There are several free Java tar implementations. Anonymous Mr. F. is
just too stupid to google for them.

"stupid" in the wrong word.

He may be lazy. He may not yet know how to use google to solve his
problem. But "stupid" is highly unlikely or he could not have posted
the message.

You forget there was a time in your life when you had never even heard
of Google.

Maybe it's "old timers" disease and he just forgot what to do ;-)

He is incapable of understanding simple advice, and instead calls people
a**holes. I call that rather stupid, because this will not fix his
apparent problem, and will significantly reduce his ability to get help
the next time he needs it.

So? How does this relate to his inability to follow simple advice? I for
sure didn't call the first person who showed me google (actually,
altavista was the thing at that time) an a**hole.

BTW, his provide knology.net has a google search bar directly on its
home page. I don't think they have it there for decorative purposes only.

You forget that you started the unpleasantries with your wiseass
remark:

who showed me google

You did not show him google, you simply wrote the word "google". Come
on; that was intended to put down, not to inform.

If you truly intended to show him google, you would give the search
arguments. When Andrew did that yesterday, he delighted his newbie
with the discovery you could search newsgroups too.

I agree your newbie responded in a childish way with his asshole
remark, but you goaded him into it. That was not a civil way to greet
a first time poster.

No, that was to tell him he should do his homework instead of wasting
our time. His reaction demonstrated that I judged him correctly as on
who is beyond hope and doesn't deserve any elaborate explanation.

I don't think he hasn't seen google before. As I mentioned, his very own
provider has a google search bar on the home page, prominently centered
over almost the full width of the page.

But you did not know that when you snapped at him.
