By itself, Pan is not a replacement for Google Groups.

that's quite understood.

Many web based programming sites archives Usenet groups that deal with
their subject. For example a C or C++ forum may archive the contents of
c.l.c and c.l.c++ alone.

I did not find any single one of them. A Google/Yahoo search tells me that
most offer paid services to USENET. The only free one I have found is
mail2web:

http://services.mail2web.com/FreeServices/Usenet/

even they run much behind e.g. the recent posts just do not appear. Latest
post is of yesterday and their search is pretty bad. If you search for
"learn C++" you will not come up with anything at all :\ . On the other
side, Newsreader like PAN and gnus are still Desktop based software, means
you loose your settings when you change your computer. I don't like this.
What if the same happens to your email ? I will feel like I am using
Outlook Express to read my mail :\

so, keeping rest (evil, spam) aside, Google is the "King of USENET", they offer
web-based service, you need only a web-broweser to access the USENET and the
biggest collection of archives totally at no charge. They also do spelling correction
of your posts.

So Google offers what no one offers and no one is going to.

It seemed to me that there were two qualifications required for the
Google Groups team. First, be an incompetent software engineer. Second,
have no personal experience with usenet.

There are a number of technical "forums" which are actually using feeds
from a select number of usenet groups. An easy way to find them is to
search in Google (not Groups) for a topic on the comp.lang.c:

No, google actually is quite good at manipulating the internet.
However, when they got into the Usenet archive business (by buying
dejanews) they apparently hired a very ignorant person to run that
branch. He (or she) is determined to never have any underlings
show him (or her) up, and hires accordingly.

Remember how it took about a year and a half to allow quoting from
google Usenet accounts?

First they had to rip out the stuff that had been working before, I
guess not to contaminate the new ignoramuses.

Oh, it ALLOWED quoting. It just took the sooper-sekrit handshake to
figure out how.

Did you look at gmane.org?

Did you look at gmane.org?

no. It is trange that using keywords like "usenet archives" and
"newsgroups archives" the Google search does not even give gmane. I
checked the 1st 10 pages of Google search and gmane wa snot there but
groups.google.com was nearly on 50% of the pages.

BTW, the gmane neither has comp.lang.c++, comp.lang.c nor it has
comp.compilers or comp.object :(

gmanes purpose in life is to make mailing lists etc. accessible via
Usenet protocols.

I googled for it ;) and found it quite eqal to AT&T's
involvement in NSA shows in the movie "The Listening".

It was only a dim recollection (I'm losing my sense
of smell or did I just say that?) and I might not have
posted if I knew you were going to double-check me. :)
To test my own Googling skills I tried
"california dmv (sold OR sells) data"
and found
http://www.dui.com/dui-library/california/dmv/dmv-sells-information
which includes
Perhaps the most startling revelation in the 35-page audit
was that the DMV sold Safeway Inc. a list of 1,000 confidential
addresses of drivers parked in the lots of two rival
supermarkets. During the $5,000 transaction, the DMV failed
to obtain the required written promise from Safeway not to
use the information for direct marketing.

Obviously we can all think of more outrageous examples
of government misconduct. What outrages me is that
Americans are, in general, *not* outraged.
thanks for that.

You're welcome. I'll try to post more cheerful
info next time.

James

BTW, to be able to read latest news and post today,
I needed to change URL manually to "groups.google.com"
from the country code it was defaulting to.
Earlier I mentioned an occasion where the only way
I found to get English-language interface in Google was
to manually change URL to the France country code!
Wikipedia uses "en.wikipedia.org" to give English
interface. Does Wikipedia have a patent on that
approach? Is that why Google doesn't use it?

The funny/sad irony is that, while you guys add "Remove"
strings to your e-mail addresses, G-Groups won't let us do that.

Gosh. Fancy that, Google Beta Groups doing something right.
