Force Column Width in a table

I have to display a lot of data in a table, it ends up being about 20 columns
and the user has to scroll to view the entire table. This is exactly what I
want, but for some columns I want to force the width to a specific width. I have
been experimenting with the first column in the table. If I set the width to
500px it works by itself, but when I add the other 19 columns it ends up the
width of the text in the column. Anyway to avoid this and keep the column at
    500px?

    Thanks!
    Scott
