Jehosephat, how, uh, serio-cosmic. In the new world we have women named
"Josie" and women who are hos but I dunno any women named "José" (or at
least none whose names have that exact phonetic construct except maybe
when they're sneezing.)

Dutch women called José pronounce it as Yo-zay. (accent on second
syllable)

It's easier than that. In most Windows applications, for letters with
acute accents, you can just press "Ctrl+Alt+letter". Alternatively, you
can press "Alt Gr+letter" for the same effect.

For example, "Ctrl+Alt+E" gives é, whereas "Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E" gives É.
It's the same for any of the vowel characters.

I'm not sure if there are any shortcuts like that for grave accents or
for umlauts etc. I'm also not sure if this shortcut works in any other
OS's, or indeed whether it always works in Windows! It's always worked
for me, so I have no reason to think otherwise for Windows.

Well.. in this application here, Dialog, I press Ctrl + Alt + e and
nothing happens. Besides that, I don't know how you type, but for me,
pressing the left-Alt with my left hand and typing any combination of
3 digits (the ones I use are all in my head and have been since I was
17 or so) with my right hand, is far easier than trying to press ctrl
and alt and the letter e or a all with my left hand. I'd actually have
to look at my keyboard to do it :\
I'm not sure if there are any shortcuts like that for grave accents or

See? That's one more reason why alt-anything is easier: é í á ë è ç ã
ñ ê ... all without having to think about different keys for different
shortcuts. Just Alt and all digits for which I don't have to move my
hand :p

Well, it doesn't work in my Dialog on WinXP :)

Hmmm, what Window apps for you? Don't seem to work in any of my Window
apps in W2K. Ctrl+Alt+letter brings up endnotes bar in Word and does
nothing in most other apps.

Alternatively, you
can press "Alt Gr+letter" for the same effect. What is 'Gr'?

For example, "Ctrl+Alt+E" gives é, whereas "Shift+Ctrl+Alt+E" gives É.

é <- Alt+130
é <- ALT+0233

works for me in Mozilla and others

"Alt Gr" - it's the alt-key on the right iirc. It has different
functions than the one on the left. I'm guessing 'gr' stands for great
or grand?

I must admit I've never heard that name (Yo-ZAY) before. Now in the
movie "Rocky" there was a "Yo-Adrian"....

No, there was a "Yo-Adrienne" -- Rocky was calling a female, not a male.

It isn't actually possible to do that on a laptop machine without great
difficulty as the alt+keypad combinations require that you use the
keypad numbers, but my laptop doesn't have one ;)

Must be your version of Windows? I presume you have a Dutch version? I'm
just guessing now that maybe the localised versions are different, or
that there is some different set-up with non-UK keyboards...

Works in all of the apps I have. I am now beginning to think that this
is something that works only in UK versions of Windows using a UK layout
keyboard.
What is 'Gr'?

It's a key between the space bar and the right Ctrl key. IIRC the "Gr"
bit means Graphic, or at least that's what IBM have always said.

Yes. But wouldn't that be more reason to have shortcuts for é and ë?
(as they are part of our language, not yours) :)

You mean if I would set my keyboard to Dutch or UK instead of US, it
might work?

Hmm I have:

[SPACE] [RT ALT] [WIN*] [MENU**] [RT CTRL]

*the right-side version of the infamous 'Windows' key or otherwise know
as: "f***! I touched you and now I've bombed out of my game" key.

**Windows Menu key, another virtually useless key the opens a window's
menu, but your never know which one, sometimes it is the edit menu
sometimes the view menu. I rather use ALT+E or ALT+V and know what I am
getting!

Interesting. I've never seen a laptop with a keypad, but mine certainly
has enough space on it! I think part of the problem would be that the
keyboard wouldn't be centered to the screen, which could be a potential
cause of RSI.

That could be the reason, yes :)

For the past two years my keyboard hasn't been centered to the monitor
here (my desk just isn't big enough), and I never had any rsi
symptoms. As I'm typing this, I'm sitting directly facing the monitor,
while my hands are typing slightly to the right. Actually, the A on my
keyboard is centered to the screen. I could move it slightly to the
left and have the F in the center, but then my Tea would fall of the
desk... ;-)
I think RSI has more to do with staying in the exact same position for
a long time than with all these ergonomic chairs, desk heights, mouse
mats and keyboard vs screen position. Not for nothing it's called
Repetitive Strain Injury. Nothing repetitive if you keep moving
around.
That could be the reason, yes :)

So.. how about you try it out - set your keyboard to US and see if it
still works <g>

Hah! I was going to type "Adrienne" first but figured it more likely
spelled "Adrian".

Last night I watched The Specialist, also with Stallone.
Sharon Stone played the lead female character, a woman called Adrian
Hastings.

(having written the above, I checked on IMDB.com and guess what: Rocky's
wife is called Adrian)
