Full Screen Game

Mike

Sup everyone,
I'm still only a scenior in highshool, but I am attempting to make
a full screen version of the board game Triopoly (Monoply with 3 levels
and a heck of a lot more money going around the table). I am currently
in AP Java AB (AP Java 2) and have set up most of the needed classes,
and am beginning to debug it in dos. I know how to set up everything
for a full screen application and I was wondering if anyone could give
me pointers on double buffering stratigies and how to create custom
buttons/text boxes/menu/text area graphics. I intend to have this
project finished by the end of the year before I go to college
(depending on how much time the gui/ai take), but I do not know
everything.
If anyone could point me to some tutorials or give me some sample
code pertaining to the methods use to make a graphic skin over the
buttons/text boxes/menues/text areas I would be very apperciative.
Thank you very much for you time.

Sup is another word for "Whats up" or "Hello", I use it because that is
what I see mostly in other groups/chat situations, if it offends you, I
will refrain from using it in the future. But thank you for the input.

Duh! (slaps forehead)
..or "Hello", I use it because that is

It does not *offend* me, but..
..I will refrain from using it in the future.

I would appreciate that.* These groups are frequented by a large
number of people for whom English is a second language. Anything
that helps people to understand each other has to be a good thing.

* Perhaps I should comment that I myself use quite ..interesting
abbreviations at times, but I am careful to *only* use them when in
a conversation with someone that I know will understand them.
..But thank you for the input.

You're welcome.

Thanks for accepting my comment graciously, some people
get a little ..upset. ;-)

Now, I had your question open, ready for a response if I had
the time. I've found the time, so I'll put some initial thoughts.
Look out for it soon(ish).

I decided to reply before reading andrew's responses, so consider this a
less friendly enhancement.
Sup everyone,

spelling, and frankly I don't care
in highshool, but I am attempting to make
a full screen version of the board game Triopoly (Monoply with 3 levels
and a heck of a lot more money going around the table). I am currently
in AP Java AB (AP Java 2)

I take this to mean something like "I am taking a course called advanced
placement Java . . . " and again I don't care
and have set up most of the needed classes,

What info am I supposed to glean from this? How does this help me help you?
and am beginning to debug it in dos.

debug what? What is "in dos"? You mean you are running windows 3.1, or
opening a dos window in windows XP or really booting to dos from a
floppy? And again, I don't care. What version of Java, or whose JVM,
or what OS you are using maybe I care if it is relevent to your specific
problem. Oh wait, you haven't posted a specific problem.
I know how to set up everything
for a full screen application

Now we are getting somewhere. I can find references to a
getFullScreenWindow() method in java.awt.GraphicsDevice, so by a *huge*
assumption I can get myself to believe you are opening an awt window and
drawing on it.
and I was wondering if anyone could give
me pointers on double buffering stratigies and how to create custom
buttons/text boxes/menu/text area graphics . . .

Ah, pretty before carefully crafted, thoroughly tested, and fully
functional. That's nice. Post in a programmer's newsgroup to get some
pointers from real industry professionals about how to make something
pretty.

I have a teen-age son who is currently in the US Naval Academy, and I
can assure you if he displayed logic as vacuous as this during his high
school years he would have been thoroughly reamed.

Next time, if you need specific help with a specific problem, be sure to
check out C.L.J.help. Otherwise, learn to paint if you want pretty.

Good lord, Marcus, what a mood you're in today!

Mike, sorry, I don't have any answers to your questions, but do let us
know when your game's finished: it sounds interesting.

marcus, I gave you my background so you could better know my skill
level. In my question, I assumed that dos was a standard that could be
run on most machines (and that if there is a difference on mac, people
who used macs would be able to at least understand my process), I am
sorry if this is not, but to clarify, I am debugging my process in the
XP dos shell. As far as my gui question goes, I have found several
solutions to that, and am researching each to find what meets my needs.
As for my question on double buffering stratigies, I could still use
some more information. If anyone has some time to refrence some links,
I would be very appreciative.

'Sup Mike,

I'm not sure how basic/advanced of a tutorial you are looking for, but
you may want to start here:
http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/extra/fullscreen/

And some other interesting articles can be found here:

HTH,
Carl.

P.S.
Dont feed the trolls.

<snip>

There really was no reason to be rude and obnoxious to the kid. He
wasn't hurting you.

If you didn't have any REAL help to offer him, you could have just
ignored his post and moved on to something that DID interest you.

I have teenage sons myself & quite frankly I had no problem
understanding his request. He sounded like every other teenager out
there. In fact, he was a lot more polite than many I have run into.

Frankly, if you would "ream" your son for such a harmless post as the
one Mike posted, then I feel sorry for your son.

Thanks a lot for the links Carl and Todd, I have skimmed them briefly
right now, and added them to my list of sites to look through more
carefully. Most specifically, the java3d link intersts me, not really
for this program, but I am also intersted in learning j3d in general.

As I mentioned before, I have found several solutions to my custom gui
problem. Right now, I plan to use the synth package
(javax.swing.plaf.synth). I am already in the process of making the
images and xml document. I hope to have a working test by the end of
today.

Was helpful. Learn to think, and learn how to effectively use
resources. Just read his babble in response to my post. Kid can't think.

don't feel sorry for my son -- he is an A student at the Naval Academy
and having the time of his life. And he can think on his own.

Now I understand!

Judging by your grammar, I am assuming that your correction of the
misspelling of the word college was a sarcastic joke. You're _quite_
funny mr. marcus. I knew you could not really be such an ass, but your
sly and subtle sense of humor now makes it clear that you were only
parodying an ass!

Bravo.
Carl.

P.S. Don't top post, it makes you appear unacquainted with news group
posting. Perhaps that was part of your "character" as well?
