Get MAC Address

You can only do this with a thick client such as an ActiveX control or .net
code running on the client machine.

Not at all.

I suggest reading a good introductory book about network basics.

Something like "TVP IP for Dummies".

Then you may understand why you have no access to it.

MAC addreses are very local. You can only access them:

* From the local computer.
* If you are in the same network segment as the calling computer.

They in general do not cross router boundaries. They are not supposed to.
They are just there to get a segment operational.

This website is able to get the MAC address of my work computer(no firewall)
It doesn't work with my home comp because it's connected to a router.
still this is very interesting, i'd like to know how they did it.
