Getting IP and the respective host name of the nodes in an interanetwork or a subnet?

Hi i am trying to learn the network programming and now i have a proble.I
wanna create an application that automatically scans all the active machine
and dispaly all its IP and Host names?

Kindly reply to me as early as possible
