The rest, presumably, being "Use the Mozilla DOM Inspector, right click on
the tree, then pick the obvious menu item"?

Its a bit difficult to give an example of that... at least short of having
screen shots with big arrows drawn over them.

There is no rule maker of the Internet. There is accepted practices but
that is like ethics. It is not something you can shove down someone's
throat. Now if what I do inhibits responses to my questions then you have
achieved your ends. Namely to assert your authority over me by not
answering. To remind me of your authority does nothing. I try to make my
posts as pleasant and clear as I can. If you have a problem with that buddy
I have problems with some of the accepted practices. But I do not whine
about it. Now please instruct your children they have an obligation to you.
I do not.

Absolutely. The internet would not work without rules. Those rules are
the IP protocol family.

This is about Usenet, which is mostly running over the internet these
days (in the beginning, communication were also handled by air-mailing
8 inch tapes between continents. Usenet is older than the world wide
internet.

Here too, rules are important to make it run, and the NNTP protocol is
an example.

The rules you are referring to are probably not the technical ones,
but the social rules. It is the "best practices" for posting that hae
evolved over time, and that quite a lot of people agree are better
than the alternatives. One of these is "do not top post, and always
trim your quotes".

Absolutely. There are some who don't know, but do care when they are
informed. There are some that don't know, and that don't want to know.
And then there are those who knows, and who still doesn't care.

The last group is the one I personally have a problem with. They know
that many people prefer a different way of posting, but yet they post
how they want to anyway, ignoring the wishes of the intended readers.
In those cases, I have no problem treating them with the same
disregard as they treat me, and ignore their post. If I am feeling
generous, I will give them a chance and tell them that their behavior
is counterproductive if they want their questions answered (i.e., I
give them the benefit of the doubt and only calssify them as "don't
know", not "don't care").

Orders will usually not make people change their opinion, that is
correct. The more stubborn a person is, the more entrenched they get

same way to some degree.

If what you do has an effect, I can't see how that makes somebody else
actively achieve his ends. His ends might be achieved, but it is not
he who does it. Rather it is everybody who responds or choses not to

George. There really is no point in replying to someone who has just
killfiled you. It's like shouting at someone who has just put the phone down
on you. They can't hear you.

If you keep up with this attitude, you are going to lose the ears / eyes of
all the good and very knowledgeble people in here which would be a great
shame as there is much to be gained from them.

A word of advice if I may. Check the attitude at the door. Respect the
conventions of the group. Don't shout at people who want to help you. Read
the group's FAQ's (regularly posted by the tireless Jim, or available online
at http://www.jibbering.com/faq). Contribute to the group in a friendly way.
Ask questions and gladly receive answers whether they help or not. If they
don't help, mention it in a polite way and maybe another solution can be
found. If they do help, thank the person/s who helped you. Above all,
remember that nobody gets paid for doing this. We are all taking time out of
our lives - and many of us are taking time away from paid work - to try and
help each other. Isn't that the spirit of the internet you were on about?
