How to test IE5 compatibility

T

Thomas Henz

Hi!

I'm looking for a way to test my html pages for IE5 (4, too if possible)
compatibility without installing a windows with IE5 on it. What
possibilities do I have?

Thanks a lot

Thomas

None. IE is part of the operating system. If you want a different version on
your system you have to install another copy of the operating system,
probably in a different partition. I personally use several computers
(old/spare ones).

You could ask a friend. You could ask for a check here.
Cheers

No thanks. You'd go broke testing out one site alone.
A monthly fee based upon bandwidth used or a flat feee, would be more
appropriate.
As I read on one site, why test for all browser compatability? Just test to
see if the browser handles the function or not.

As in if (documient.images){ }.

IEEEK...it's expensive!

You're right. But on the other hand, if you see how much time (and money) it
takes to handle complaints because layout is not correct in Mac or IE4 .....
I solved the problem for IE5 and 5.5 by installing it on the PC's of my
daughters. Problem is I have not enough kids to deal with IE4 and the
Mac-versions :)

Or set up your computer to dual-boot.

Or better still, use something like Bochs/Plex86/VMWare to run multiple
OSes side by side. (Can be slow, but it's a good solution otherwise)

By current test bed consists of:

Linux:
- Opera 7.21
- Mozilla 1.4
- Lynx 2.8.5dev12
- Links
- Amaya
- eLinks
- Epiphany
- Konqueror
- Galeon
- Dillo 0.7.3
- Netscape 4

Windows:
- IE 2
- IE 4
- IE 5
- IE 5.5
- IE 6
- Opera 3.62
- Opera 5
- Opera 6
- Opera 7
- HotJava
- Mosaic 2.1

and probably more, I forget.

Where is the sense in testing browsers that are used by 0,01% users? I
would test pages on ns 4.x , mozilla 1.4 and 1.5, opera 7 (every opera 6
user will upgrade to 7 i guess) and ie 5 and 6 - maybe konqueror, but
that should do.

old lap-tops make splendid test machines and they don't take up much space

you know what to do - just get on with it ;o)
