if there is a way to work this by someone clicking on a link to their site
with info from my
site that would register a sale. It is hard to explain so I'll post the
email reply I got from them.

Re-read your message and pretend you're not the person that wrote it -
does it make sense?

"Their" site will need to accept some information from your link, such
as your affiliate ID, so that they know that the sale has come from
you. Clicking your link to their site doesn't constitute a sale, does
it?
