html special characters to latin-1 conversion

I had a look to this htmlentitydefs lib, but I still
don't know how to convert html special characters into
latin-1 characters.
For instance, how can I convert ' into ' or é
and é into é?
Is there any function to do that?

Searching comp.lang.python for 'htmlentitydefs' gives quite a few solutions.
