HtmlMessages how do I put a message in a Message List?

I am attempting Sun Creator
I have a "Message List" component which they say is useful for error messages
but javax.faces.component.html.HtmlMessages has NO METHOD to put a string in it.
How do I put a string in it? or log or error to it???


Yet another reason why I hate web-bases...
If I'm writing an Application in good old java, I just google
somejavaclass +(Tutorial or example) and problem solved

but google HtmlMessages +(tutorial OR example) and nothing useful this way comes...
