Hyperlink Dialog Box

Jim McGivney

In the Hyperlink Dialog Box documentation, the protocol "File" is listed
with the description "Download a file and open it."
Can someone explain what this does. Does it open a file from my webpage on
the users computer or does it download a file to my webpage, or does it do
something else ? The dialog box allows me to enter a URL that begins
"file://", what exactly do I place after the file:// ?
Thanks for your help,
Jim

This typically refers to a local file, so the url would be something like

file:///c:/temp/foo.bar

although you can also use UNC names (can anybody confirm that), so
something like

file://myshare/temp/foo.bar

Oddly enough though, I've just tried this in IE and Firefox and they
both ignore the link if I click on it, but they both follow the link if
I type it into the address bar, wonder if that's a security thing?
