Identifying with "document" across tables

Purely for experimental purposes.
I just want to know why it ain't working.

You have a 4x4 table array.
In table cell 1x1 you have an image, and in table cell 4x4 you have an
image.
Click on cell 1x1 and the image in table cell 4x4 changes to another image.
I tried using onclick="document.imagename.src='newimage'" but I get an error
message.
"Object expected" or "is not an object".
The trick works fine in divisions, but not apparently across tables.
Is there a reasoning behind this or am I missing something here?
Any other methods to use?
