IIS and Norton

Philip Townsend

I recently installed Norton Internet Security on my development machine.
I have used similar firewall products in the past without difficulties.
This product, however, rendered my IIS useless. I was unable to access
development projects on my localhost. Furthermore, I was unable to
access the IIS console. It gets better. After research and attempts to
work with the firewall settings, I was unable to access the Internet
altogether. The only way I was able to fix the problem was to wipe out
the hard drive and do a fresh install. Thinking that something got hosed
during the orginal installation, I installed Internet Security
Professional again. Surprise, same results. My IIS was useless, I had no
Internet connectivity, the software did not show up in Add/Remove, there
was no uninstall in the application directory, and yes, my only option
was to wipe out the HD and reinstall windows. Be forwarned about this
product. Symantec tech support was TOTALLY useless on this issue as
well. Can anybody make any other recommendations for a firewall product?

Try sygate, it used to be decent... make sure you dont use block all when
your browser tries to access inetinfo.exe

I have been doing web development for some time using the
free version of ZoneAlarm from ZoneLabs.com. I have been
using it for about 3 years and it is solid. The best part
is that it is free for personal use. They also offer
ZoneAlarm Pro for a about $40 which is much more robust.
You may want to check it out.
