java runtime on windows xp sp2 won't render

Hi.

I have a machine with Windows XP SP2 which was recently updated. After
the update, regular java applications, including the control panel,
won't render. Java Applets running in a browser window, however, will
render.

Has anyone else experienced this? Any thoughts and what I can do to
fix it?
