log4j custom appender problem

Hi all.
I've a custom appender that contains a JTextArea and I want to write
the log messages on it.
I create a frame with a JTextArea, than I initialize the custom
appender with that area. I've debug it and the appender is
initializated, but when a logging event occurs when the method "append"
is invoked the text area is null (but the frame width the text area is
visible!).

Why?
