Menu drop down area is white where there is no text

I'm using asp:Menu and when the dropdown list shows the colors I've selected
effects the letters and the letters' back color.

But the rest of the area is white.

That is, a white rectangle drops down containing letters. Each letter has a
forecolor and a backcolor but, the area to the left and right of the letters
is white.

Is there some way I can have a color rather than white?

Fixed it - had to set a dynamic property.
