New York forces shutdown of usenet

(Basically, because child porn was found on 88 newsgroups, New York is
pushing ISPs to eliminate or severely curb usenet groups.)

What the jackass doesn't understand is, if alt groups are shut down
entirely as a whole, someone will come along shortly thereafter and
create a whole new hierarchy.

The definition of child pornography was not disclosed in the report.
But I can imagine that like so many other Puritans and moral majority
pushers, that nudity equals CP.

He's also basing his conclusion on the fact that less than 1% of
usenet carries such items. So with that reasoning, he should shut down
the internet as well.

What's next? Take away your driver's license because 1% of drivers are
found DUI?

Cumo is a stupid fucking liberal, and this is what they bring to the
table. Socialism and control over all aspects of our lives because we
are too stupid to run our own lives. Welcome to the new world boys
and girls. I guess we should have been more careful about what we
asked for eh?

Does anyone have a link to what's really happening here? Everything
I've seen so far has been so confused and badly written it's at the
"Usenet websites" level.

What's _actually_ getting pushed here? alt.*? alt.binaries.*?
alt.pr0n.*? All of Usenet? Some named web sites hosted in NY?

ISPs barely carry Usenet anyway. If you're serious about it, you're
likely to have a separate non-ISP account with Giganews etc. Although
my "geek-friendly" ISP still claims to carry Usenet, the service has
been so pitiful for years that many migrated away to a pay service.

Cuomo is simply mouthing off for the attention of the Democratic
Party. He might be looking at getting the nod for the US AG office.

My news service, newsguy, simply does not carry those groups.
When news services first banned those CP groups, the posters simply
created other groups and used them.

From my understanding, Cuomo wants usenet shut down entirely.
Which he might be able to do within the state of NY. But not
nationally. Then those he has targeted, two of which happen to provide
cell service, are hardly usenet peers that have any real clout within
the usenet world. If they were lost, would anyone care? Any resident
in NY could simply seek out other services.

In Usenet, "shut down" means "not carried". If an ISP chooses not to
carry the alt.* hierarchy, then it certainly is going to choose not to
carry anything someone sets up to serve the same purpose.

It will be interesting to see what happens with Google groups. I would
guess since there are no binaries they may just ignore all this. Then
again Google groups shutting down would proabably make a few here
happy.

Ahh, so that's it. Our esteemed state gov't is causing me to lose my
RoadRunner access to Usenet. Local discussions indicated it was just
Time Warner chopping services.

I am in Texas so I can't do this - but call a politico and if same
party as Andrew Cuomo say I will not vote for you because of this
action of your party.
If other party say you are not competent to defend my rights so I
will not vote for you - NOVEMBER IS NEAR - they WILL listen.

I can only find land line and fax on web page - email address would be
handy

Scream Long and loud - worked on Carbon cap bill - yes???
