objects default to top left corner when adding to templates

Whenever I add an object, ie textbox or whatever, to a template, for instance
a gridview edit template, the object goes to the top left hand corner of the
template. I have to go into the source and remove the positioning details of
the object for each object I add. After I do this, the object will go to the
position where the cursor was flashing and where I originally inserted it.
This doesn't seem right. Can't an object be inserted on a template in the
spot where the cursor is flashing and not bounce to the top left corner all
the time?
