Online Payment Setup

K

Ketchup Please

I'm looking to create a Web site that accepts credit card payments. On
another news group I was told that I'd have to go to a bank to set up the
ability to do online transactions. Is this really true? I thought there were
many online financial transaction processing companies I could work with.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

If you want to use something other than Paypal you'll need a merchant
account. Many banks have agreements already with different merchant
gateways, those are the people who process the transactions, so you may want
to start at the bank to see which ones they support for deposit into your
account. Verisign should also have some decent white papers on getting
started with a merchant account and online processing. I believe Geotrust
also has a gateway now and may be a good place as they also have a cheap ssl
certificate, which you'll probably want to handle your credit card
information between the browser and server securely.

Hope this helps,
