You should take a look at the JFileChooser swing component. Which acts
like a common dialog.

there are two:
java.awt.FileDialog
javax.swing.JFileChooser

Yes:
javax.swing.JFileChooser
java.awt.FileDialog
are made for this.

I'd normally use the first, but on Mac OS X the second is better.
