I'd like your opinion on web designers with college degrees who were totally
school-taught vs. the self-taught guys who've been around since before schools
taught it.
It wasn't until after 2000 that schools started taking this field seriously,
and it won't be long before all the paper tigers start to show up.
Good? Bad? Ugly?
When you say "college" are you talking about actual colleges and
universities? Or post secondary tech/IT schools?
I really don't think a college degree would be too useful in this field, in
fact it might be a hinderance if the candidate it looking for full time work
(alot changes over the years it would take to get a college degree... all
the stuff you learned in the early days would be out of date in some
regards)
I went to a technical school (7 month course) a few years ago and can say
that I think it was a good benefit.
They didn't just teach us how to do HTML, CSS, ASP and SQL (which is about
where somebody self teaching themselves would stop) but instead also covered
things like structured programming, project management, programming theory,
marketing, business writing/documentation, flowcharting, color theory and
business management.
I dabbled in some HTML before I went to school for it, but I would still
definitly say atleast 90% of what I know, in regards to web design and
programming, came from school, and I turned out pretty good.
