padding inside an input (text) tag

See <http://remarqs.net/misc/googlebox.htm>.

I was trying to use padding and a background image inside the
searchbox, mimicking the look of Firefox's search thingy. In IE and
Mozillan browsers it works, but Opera ignores the padding. The box
looks ok in Opera, but the blinkencursor shows up all the way at the
left of the box rather than 24 pixels over, where I had hoped the
padding would put it. I haven't checked what Konqueror or Safari do.

This is pretty frivolous, and it won't break my heart if there's no
good solution, but any ideas would be welcome.

Check
"Tools" > "Preferences" > "Advanced" > "Content" > "Enable styling of forms"

That box is checked in my Opera, but still the cursor appears to the
left of the background image. (If I uncheck it, the background image
doesn't show up at all, which makes sense.)

That's odd -- looks fine here. (Opera 9.00 Preview 1.)

I get the same here as »Q« in Opera 8.5 - perhaps they have changed it
in v9.

I'm using Opera 8.51, the Win32 version. I'd appreciate it if someone
else with Opera 8.x would check it out so I know whether or not it's
just a problem with my settings.

(Also, is the Opera 9 preview available to the public at large? I
couldn't find it on their web or ftp sites.)

Thanks to both of you for the feedback. I won't implement the thingy
until well after Opera 9 has been released. (Assuming it also works
with KHTML, which I haven't checked.)
