Pages that work at different resolutions

I was looking at Microsoft's Home page and the way the graphics expand to
fit the screen depending on the resolution of the screen. Can anyone give me
any guidelines how they do this. I understand making tables stretch what is
the best approach with images? Do you just use big images optimised for a
1024 browser and then resize them for a 800?

Disable JavaScript and see what happens. Yes they have made a few
versions at different sizes and use load whichever best fits for current
browser windows size...

I always find it amusing when I see Microsoft hacking around the
deficiencies in their own browser.

Never a good idea, if you're looking for good practice in web design.
M$oft's own sites are very nasty in terms of poor design for anything
other than a vanilla IE running on a standard desktop and with all the
bells and whistles turned on.
