That sounds more realistic.
So you mean that Italians are not so loved in Australia, after all, don´t
you?

Just to be clear: Italians are fondly accepted here (Neredbojias
is just being a bit naughty). Here, they are an old established
migrant group now and no one much talks about them as a migrant
group. The present Premier of NSW is from an Italian family,
that's how establishment they are.

I suppose I have met some from Eritrea who seemed to like
talking to me..

I guess you know this, perhaps a word of explanation for some
others: Eritreans are the Ethopian's enemy, having fought a
bloody war with them... and so of course they would warmly greet
you on the principle of "my enemy's enemy is my friend".

Of course, but use a plain text list for the ingredients, a <p>
or two and maybe a div and forget the fancy stuff. You don't
need a table. Maybe just don't use a stylesheet at all! Just
plain html. Let the browser default styling rule (it is likely
to be good enough for this purpose). If you want a pic, float it
and let the text wrap about.

The emphasis of the comment was a dun on Australians as a joke.
Italians just happened to be the control group, so to speak.

Eritrea - I've heard that word before. Is it a new name for Ethiopia or
the name of another country?

Talking of this property I notice you use "scope" in <td>s as
well. This latter I have barely heard of. I roughly understand
"display" but have never once used it.

I have probably read about it on the Internet and forgot to validate the
style sheet when I created it.
I have read a lot about visual formatting as well but perhaps I should read
about it again

Perhaps you have a

Probably yes.
However, I can add this element again after validating the page.
I can try step by step.

I hope it is not because you feel you *must* use all
this fancy stuff for no specific reason? You need to have a
better perspective of what you understand. A lot can be done
with some smaller subset of things easy to comprehend and
clearly necessary.

See above
Btw, about your side menu, I asked you before once why the
underlining? You have styled a simple list to go into coloured
boxes. Why this even?

Because I like it.

IMO, you need a better perspective of the
function and a better styling will result. For a start, it is
not such a menu that people will be visiting time and again to
navigate. It is just to set the language - to be used once and
that is that. So why so prominent a styling in boxes?

Because I think that it looks ok.

At the
most, a simple text list will do (perhaps a heading to it to
draw attention), taking up less space. Consider even the most
basic JavaScript dropdown boxes seen all over for choosing a
country or postcode or whatever on so many sites for "use rarely
or just once" list of links).

I do not like JavaScript because it makes users more vulnerable as far as I
understand.
The big heading with so many words in it looks a bit ugly, such
a mouthful, such an eyeful. Things are better designed to be
self explanatory without having to say in so many words what
they are, you already have a list of language links...

Considering that you are so busy with your business apart from
the website, have you considered using one of many templates
that can be had for nothing or even bought cheaply?

I thought about it a long time ago and I concluded that it was not a good
idea.
The good ones are not cheap and this is not a good way to learn either.

Or finding a
basic one that you like and putting your own content in, offer a
fine Italian wine or full course dinner coupon to the owner for
the privilege?

May-be I should clear up one thing again:
1) There are opinions I share with other people but it would be more
difficult to find a page which has everything you like.
Besides this limits the creativity. And creativity is important in life.
What about Frontpage or Dreamweaver and you just concentrate on
design and ask for help on this (at perhaps a more appropriate
newsgroup or even this one?), you then just trust to the output
of the wysiwig (just see that it works in most browsers and be
done)

dorayme

Frontpage makes a lot of mistakes.
Dreamweaver is perhaps better but probably more expensive and, besides, I
prefer to develop my own creativity.

this is not kidding, all my tips are really good. OK maybe not
1st class but good nevertheless - 2nd class (hons) at least.

I like the implication of what might seem on the face of it to
be totally irrelevant: that you are not the only Italian on this
earth. Maybe saying to me: "Hey, go pester other Italians..."
:)

Luigi, you have an unusual deadpan sense of logic/humour or
logic/unhumour and I want to engage you to star in a film. Or at
least to allow me the rights to your personality. I would need
to interview you of course (can be done electronically) and a
contract drawn up by lawyers. You are a businessman so what do
you say?

Yes, but is also an individual matter. There may be people who like me as
well, regardless of the nationality.

I want 2 pictures on the homepage, not just one.
As to the style sheet I have probably imported it and modified a little bit
from other pages of my website.
I was perhaps training my ability of formatting visually and I do not assume
that I should learn everything in a minute.
I may have come across difficulties as much as it concerns validating
because one validator did not do the job for https sites.

Luigi, do you know the saying, 'just enough knowledge to be dangerous'?

Seriously man, maybe you need to get some good books or take a class.
The 'by your own bootstraps' self-taught method just doesn't seem to
suit your needs.

Okay then, I guess it is time to try classes! I am sure in Italy they
have the equivalent of USA's Community Colleges.

Be wary of this as well.

1. A couple years ago, I spoke with the instructor of an adult class on
web page authoring. His course used one of the lesser-known WYSIWYG
programs, and he had no clue about proper coding, validation, or even
good-looking design.

2. My daughter attended a New York State college, had to take a
web-authoring course, where .. animated gifs were recommended!

3. A friend teaches a senior citizen web authoring class, and you must
have FrontPage to sign up for it...

Agreed, My son's major is Computer Science and his Freshman course on
web authoring last year sort of skipped basic CSS! But Luigi here seems
to need some hands on tutoring and guidance that has been a very
frustrating experience here in this NG. At this point I'd take the risk!

Some argue that all the pages should have the same color to be consistent
but I find that consistency can be based on other elements and not necessary
on the color. And even if I should use only one color, there is no need to
choose it now.

2. has a link with "Italy" inadvertently doubled

That sounds more interesting, which one?
3. has at least one page in the English version that isn't in English

Which ones?

I find more practical to have these pages under construction because they
help me have a structure even while the site is under construction.
6. has the last updated date formatted inconsistently from page to page

I am not sure what you mean but if I understood you properly you are right.
That is something which I could repair during the next months.
7. has, on some of the pages, a mysterious 1x1 image in a strange place,
with alt text in the wrong language.

I think it is used to skip the navigation links.
The wrong language should be the right one but which pages do you exactly
mean?
