Pop-up window sizing issue

D

Daimajin

Hi all,
odd thing just started happening today. I had set up a page that when
you click on thumbnails it would open a pop-up sized to the image
selected. The images/pop-up window in question were W 426 H 300 and for
the longest time ( a year? ) it worked fine, but today I clicked on it
and it seemed to only open up to say...W 426 H 250, cutting off the
bottom 1/4 or so of the image. I have changed nothing on these, I even
tripled checked to see if I uploaded over the files or something.

really odd thing is this is only happening in netscape 7.2 running on a
comp with a rez of 1024 X 726. If I look at it in Explorer on the same
comp it's fine, on my other 2 systems ( both at 600 X 800 rez ) it is
fine in both Explorer and NS. It just started happening out of the
blue...could this be some virus or something?

Just really weird it only happens in NS on one comp.

Thanks,
Matt

Hi all,

Hmmm. Popup blocker not working? That *is* odd.

Thanks for the quick reply mark :)

Not sure if I made myself clear but I want these to pop-up and open.
it's not a pop-up that would say have an ad in it. The only way they
open is if you click on the image ( thumbnail ) to veiw a larger full
color version. I wouldn't think NS's pop-up blocker would work on these
as it never did before ( but still blocked ad's and such from other
sites as it should ).

Thanks,
Matt

What about what your visitors want?

It can be configured to. And other popup blockers may block them too.
Leave the user the option whether to open a new window or not. Don't
make that decision for them.

Basically they would want to have it pop open, as they would be chosing
it to. when you came to the page it was a page full of thumnails from
the restorations of my 68 & 69 Firebirds. On the page there were bout 30
thumbnails and the user would have to "click on image to veiw a larger
full color image" as it stated under the thumbnails.

They were opening up as I wanted them to for almost a year until last
night. I never had a problem and for some reason now the resized window
pops up with the image in it as selected but instead of opening up to
the preset size it's opening up 25% shorter...but only in NS 7.2 on my
main comp, all my other systems work fine with NS & Explorer, and this
comp is fine with explorer...just not NS anymore for some reason.

You've asked them that? Every one of them?

Yes, but who is to say that they want that larger image to open *in a
new window*? How do you know they don't want it to open in the same
window? Or in a different tab? Only the visitor can make that decision.
By forcing it to open a new window, you are removing their ability to
make that choice.

Lose the popups altogether and it isn't an issue any more.

well a little more investigating has narrowed it down to the profile in
netscape. If I veiw it in my profile it is fine and the resized pop ups
are perfect but in my wife's profile it's when the resizing is messed
up. Anyone know what setting in NS would do this between profiles?

Thanks,
Matt

a bit if gaff tape across the screen can hold them down until he gets
them fixed.

Thought without experimentation. Hit refresh in NS 7.2. You may have a
partially loaded image in your cache. Or empty your cache. Or go fishing.
Why use a popup when users have a back button to get back to where you
didn't want them to leave? New windows really p*ss me off. They should be
my option, not yours.

You should write a book - "101 uses for gaff tape".

Same thing as silver duct tape?
That's what holds my computers together. Better than tying them together
with old RS-232 cords.

Wild guess.... maybe you resized the window by hand (without knowing, could be) and NS remembered popup's position and size (i.e.
the size of an unmaximized window with that particular url). It seems extremely unlikely, though.

Who cares? The OP asked a question about what a possible solution to
the problem would be, not for the usual rant about what *you* think is
what *his* users want.

Then your answer is... ? Or are you just ranting against ranting? :)

RE/

If it's short for "gaffer's tape", the glue and fabric are both different on the
stuff I have. The glue is more removable - i.e. if you unwrap the stuff from
something you've taped awhile ago, it comes off cleanly - not leaving those gobs
of goo that duct tape does.

And when he pays us the usual fee we'll give him his answer. Until then he
has to put up with whatever replies we see fit.
