PortableRemoteObject.narrow() returns null

i am a newbie in j2ee and tried the tutorials in
http://www.netbeans.org/download/docs/41/j2ee-tutorial/index.html
specifically in the session bean section. i followed
it step by step and was able to deploy the CartBean
successfully. but i am having problems with the
CartClient. the PortableRemoteObject.narrow() function
always returns null that's why the home.create()
method throws a NullException. do i have to configure
the appserver? has anyone encountered this problem? i
would really appreciate any inputs. thanks in advance.

i am using the Sun
AppServer(j2eesdk-1_4_03-windows.exe) and Netbeans 5
IDE.
