That's not quite the whole story, as the comma operator would
break the attempted _fillbuf call, were it to be able to reach
it, as it would not be interpreted as a comma operator. However,
that's not important because the processing of the macro can
never reach that stage, as it would require something that looks
like an invocation of the getc with 2 parameters, which wouldn't
be recognised as an instantiation of the above.

Consider: getc((foo,bar))

I'm sure Phil meant to say an *unparenthesized* comma operator would
break it. The above works fine in the macro because the parentheses are
part of the macro argument and thus get passed through to the function
call.

What makes you not think I've considered that? And what makes
you think there's something worth particular consideration with
it?

I see the smiley, but referring to those of us who prefer to
discuss ISO C as "taliban" is a bit insulting, don't you think?
(And yes, I know the word literally means "students", but I doubt
that that's what you meant.)

How dare you even presume to be insulted? You call contributors
"trolls" but we must call you Mr. Thompson, and you don't want to be
called a taliban, despite the fact that you and the rest of the thugs
here INSIST on a Fundamentalist interpretation of C, which, like
religious fundamentalism, creates ignorance and bullying!

You non-contributing, mindless, pompous, stuffed-shirt, POS!

It *is* mind-boggling, isn't it? But, as I've come to believe, the only
way to make any sense out of it is to assume that Kiki really is this
blind innocent of the way he comes across. I.e., he really believes his
shit.

I heard an interesting comment/quote on one of the TV news shows
recently, said in reference to the Republican party/teabagger
phenomenon. The line is that you can get through pushing a line of
bullshit, as long as (at least one of the following is true)

1) It is true (valid).
2) You honestly believe it.

Republicans, and CLC Taliban'ers, seem to get by on #2.
The problem happens when, inevitably, they have their crisis of faith,
and lose #2.
You non-contributing, mindless, pompous, stuffed-shirt, POS!

Good, accurate, and ultimately flattering, portrayal of our friend Kiki.

Usually I ignore you two idiots but I cannot let these stupid slurs go
without a response.

Our great nation stands at a crossroads today. Sitting in the White House
is someone who wants to destroy our country and its history, someone who
wasn't himself born on US soil. He pursues appeasement abroad and
socialism at home. He has imposed healthcare "reform" that ends at a
stroke our long history of self-reliance, looking after ourselves and our
families without crawling to Big Government with a begging bowl. He wants
to undermine our constitutional rights, especially the right to bear
arms. It makes you wonder who really won the cold war after all!

But there is reason for hope: the great Tea Party movement that seeks to
reclaim America from the liberal elite. I predict a landslide victory for
President Palin in 2012 and the resurgence of our great country on the
international stage.

You are right to say that this is a metaphor for this newsgroup. You and
Nilges and Twink and Navia and the rest are like the Obama camp, seeking
to destroy and destabilize. The so-called taliban, and first among them
Mr Thompson, are like the Tea Party, wanting to reclaim this group from
the destructive vandals. God bless them in this, and God Bless America.

Hmmm, I was under the impression you had to be native-born to stand for
the US presidency.

You do understand how this works, don't you? The Repubs/TeaBaggers run
scanners on all the newsgroups (I know this may sound paranoid or too
high tech, but, really, it isn't hard to do, for anyone with even
rudimentary knowledge of the NNTP protocol), looking for keywords (such
as were present in my previous post). Then, once a keyword hit is made,
someone bashes off a mostly boilerplate (but, note well, definitely
human written) response, containing all the usual anti-Obama crap.

I know about this, because I was once, long ago, offered such a job.
You just sit around on the Internet all day, getting paid minimum wage,
looking for stuff to respond to. Your goal is to generate Internet
traffic.

Anyway, of course, Obama was born in Hawaii, in 1961. But the morons
keep pushing the alternative view. Don't judge them too harshly; they
are just playing their role.
Palin? **** a duck. If she gets in I'll build a nuclear bomb shelter in
the back garden. She barely knows which way is up. She'd make Dubya look
like a master statesman and strategist.

Of course, any minute now, Kiki will come along and admonish us all not
to discuss politics here. Well, the point is that we are *not*
discussing politics. I view the Repubs/TeaBaggers as a force of
nature, and I was only using it as an illustrative analogy for a point I
was making about the CLC regs (i.e., something which is "on topic" here).

The point is that I would no more discuss politics with
Repubs/TeaBaggers than I would discuss the weather with the wind.

Keith:

I understand your feelings about not feeding trolls and generally I
sympathize. But in this instance you must see my point of view: There are
non-Americans who read this group, and they could easily get the
impression that Kenny and Nilges speak for mainstream America. It's
important that patriots like you and I speak up, and tell the world loud
and clear that America is still a great nation under God, a land of

I see your point, and I completely disagree with it. This is not
a forum for discussions of US politics, and I am asking you not to
let it become one.

The trolls routinely post their off-topic opinions here. I no
longer bother to ask them not to because long experience has shown
that it doesn't work; instead, any attention simply encourages them.
I've found that the best possible response to them is to ignore them
completely. On the other hand, I have not (yet) seen evidence that
you are incapable of being reasonable, so I'm asking you, one more
time, not to discuss US politics here. There are, at my last count,
179 newsgroups carried by my server with "politics" in their names.
This is not one of them.

You will note that I am not addressing the substance of your
political remarks. I do have very strong opinions on the subject,
which I could easily post about at considerable length. But I
am keeping those opinions to myself, because this isn't the place
for them.

If you had ever posted anything topical here, I might be inclined

It may be important, but:

1. This isn't the right group.
2. Your political views are just as ridiculous and ill-founded as
theirs.
3. You don't speak for "mainstream America" -- you just speak for the
other group of lunatics.

I know it's really hard to accept that we elected a black guy, but face it,
it happened. It isn't the end of the world. Maybe the news hasn't reached
your part of "mainstream" America, yet, but it turns out black people got
the vote a while back and are now allowed to run for public office, even if
there's a die-hard minority of credulous fools willing to believe badly
photoshopped "evidence" that they aren't. Please stop claiming to represent
America.

If we can relate incompetent programming and "the normalization of
deviance" to Tea Baggery, then politics does indeed become on-topic
here. I have analyzed Seebach's Coding Horrors to discover that he
scapegoats Schildt (as Hitler scapegoated the Jews) because in fact
he's incompetent and has his job because of a white skin. I have gone
into some depth on this matter, using, for example, the fact that I've
implemented switch() in a real compiler.

Technical workers anxious about their job in fact formed a key bloc in
