readline and irb on linux

We have ruby installed on Sun and Linux boxes.
I use the vi key binding for readline with
the following settings in .inputrc:

cat ~/.inputrc
set editing-mode vi

This works on the Sun box, but not on Linux.
Both support completion, so I think that tells
me that readline is working.

Any help to debug this issue would be appreciated.
