or IIRC old crappy IE has some proprietary rubbish which obviously would
only work with IE so is useless. use your image editor or some server
side image manipulation scripting if automation is required.

You can't. You'll have to use your favourite image editor to do that, or
use some sort of server-side technology.

You mean rotate by some actions on the page like button?
Then you need a copy of your picture turned on its side. To do that, if you
are on w2k (and probably XP) with MS Office installed, got to Programs-->MS
Office Tools-->MS Photo Editor
Load the original image, then for the meny bar select Image-Rotate. The rest
is self explanatory

And a bit of JavaScript to swap images on some event like mouseOver
