I would like to suggest that you work through Sun's 2D graphics tutorial

http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/2d/index.html

especially where it talks about AffineTransforms.

Also, have a look at the comp.lang.java.gui FAQ, including the list of
resources in the FAQ.

And, please consider posting beginners questions to comp.lang.java.help,
and more advanced GUI questions to comp.lang.java.gui.
