Safari window.getSelection()

Hi,

having spent about half a day researching this, I have come to the
conclusion that Safari window.getselection() only returns a text
object. Can anyone confirm this?

In which case, can anyone think of a solution to this. I would like to
get the character offset at the start of the selection range. In
Mozilla, this would be pretty straightforward. In Safari/Konqueror,
has anyone got any suggestions?
