script won't run

Hi all,

I'm encountering problems when trying to execute my python script outside
PythonWin's IDE.
Running it from PythonWins goes smooth, while clicking the .py icon or
hitting the script's
name directly from the command line abruptly ends with error messages.

specifically the error is socket.error: (10061, 'Connection refused').
running Ethereal
in the background shows no activity.

any suggestions for the cause of the difference between the two methods of
executing ?
