Scriptmanager1.setfocus reference from content page

I have create a master page with the script manager code implimented:
<asp:ScriptManager ID="ScriptManager1" runat="server"
EnablePartialRendering="true" >
</asp:ScriptManager>

On my Content pages though now my scriptmanager1.setfocus(myControls)
code no longer works. What is the work around to this problem? I
know I can move the Scriptmanager reference to the local page but
there has to be a better way.
