As well as specifying the file name you have to specify the type of

name.

What?

It uses the same OS component for compression/decompression as a lot
of other MS programs use, including IE.

Whatever. Its still a whole lot better than a 185K bmp.

Cheers
Richard.

But yeah, if it came down to a choice between the BMP and and a badly
rendered GIF, take the badly rendered GIF. Just saying that you'd be silly
to use Paint to save a GIF.

I dont save in gif format in Paint period.
If I cant produce something to be proud of, then I dont produce it.

Done now guys!

Not if I include the quotes. Which I did in this case. zipping1.bmp was
changed to "zipping1.jpg"

<sigh. Am I really here teaching somebody how to use paint?>

Changing the name is *not* enough. Paint does not care nor correlate between
a files suffix and its content. You can call the file whatever you want,
including quotes or not, but if that bottom combo box says "bmp" then that
is what you get, a bitmap.

If you want to cause paint to save the file as a jpeg then you *must* drop
down that bottom combo box and choose "jpeg". Once again paint does not care
what the filename is, it just spits out a jpeg to the indicated location.

Same with the browser (IE anyway). It doesn't care at all what a file is
called. It looks inside the file to determine what format the file is. (if
the first two bytes of the file are BM then there is a high probability that
the file is a bitmap) That is why you can get away with having a bitmap
named whatever.jpg.

Consider notepad. You can type in some stuff and save the file as
"stuff.jpg" (including the quotes). Yep, the file has a suffix of .jpg but
it is most definately not a jpeg. It is a text file. Notepad doesn't do
jpegs.

Cheers
Richard.

Nah, it looks really shit. Paint uses a standard palette and dithers to it.
And that picture actually looks OK in Paint. I've seen Paint do much worse
than that, it depends on how suitable the standard palette is for the image
in question.

The OP does not have a picture but a screenshot of some programs menu bar.
A gif format for this, especially as it is an image of some text, is
perfectly suitable.

However, you are entirely correct. Paint screws it up royally.

Cheers
Richard.

Just had a look at the OP's image. You're right (I would expect no less!),
GIF is much more suitable than JPG (forget BMP, yuck), compression would be
much better due to the simple nature of the image. PNG would be better
again. In fact (disappears for 30 seconds):

http://www.nrkn.com/temp/zippingaa.gif
2815 bytes

http://www.nrkn.com/temp/zippingaa.png
1947 bytes

The PNG is nearly 100x smaller than the OP's BMP.

What permission are they suppose to be?

And to answer your original question, it depends on your user name and
group and what user name and group the web server is running under.

If they're the same user name, then 400 is enough. If they're the same
group, but different users, 440 is the minimum. If they're different user
names and different groups, then at least 444.

644 would be most usual though.

It would of helped if I had of put the width and height in too.

It really does help the browser dislay things better. I was doing a
website that I waited to put them in till nearly complete. It was odd
to display the pages with text often overlapping the floating images of
unknown size. I then always had to reload the page to see it as
designed. When completed, there are still some graphics that I did not
specify width and height but all the main stuff does and the overlapping
went away. The pages load correctly the first time now. When I find
time, I'll go through and catch the rest. Watching the effects was a
good lesson.

BTW, you've been asking about graphics programs. I use Paint Shop Pro
by Jasc software. I've stayed with Version 7 having tried 8 and seeing
too many changes. If you're not familiar with either, 8 would be ok as
the learning curve should be about the same with any version. PSP has
many of the features and capabilities as the more expensive programs for
$99. I think I paid about $79 for my copy of 7. The school where I
work bought 8 but I'm keeping 7 on my machine too.

I was going to suggest something that's tripped me up more than once. I
use enough graphics that I usually create image directories. A few
times I've forgotten and had to go back later to set x to the web server
for the directory. Can't list the directory contents without it on a
*nix system.
