Sockets and file transferring

I have a client and server program. Most of the time the client sends short
text commands. They can also send whole files etc. through an interface
    like an FTP client.
I think if I tried to do that with Sockets I would have to learn a bunch
of hard file encoding stuff. How should I do this? Can I use Sockets with
some other class to make it easier?

(I don't have any code right now, i'm just trying to set out my design.)
