different.

So are defaults for these kinds of things all handled the same between
different word processors or other applications? I would guess not.

So you are justifying not following standard defaults?
That's also not something up to browser interpretation, but a spec that
is either followed correctly, or not. If the browser does align at
bottom, then it is badly broken.

Under normal circumstances, the default margin and padding values on
different elements is insignificant. Who cares whether something is 3px
in one browser and 5px in another? Usually, just control freaks. ;)

So by expecting standards to be followed, that is considered control freaks?
Hey, I know, why not get rid of all specs - because only a control freak
would want specs to be followed :)

Default margin and padding values were just examples. And it does make a
difference when trying to line up boxes and tables to have a particular
look. But then I suppose that's just the control freak in me.

The point I was trying to make is that there is *no* standard default to
follow.

I'll repeat - there is no standard for margin and padding values. The
only requirement may be that they exist - how they are applied isn't
part of the spec.

There is no spec for some things. Get used to it.

I don't doubt that, but it's irrelevant to the fact that there is no
standard spec for every little thing, so browsers may deal with these as
they see fit.

There's no point in complaining about it, at least not here. Take it up
with W3C or the browser vendors if it bothers you so much. I doubt
either of these courses of action will get you very far, so you're
better off just learning to account for browser differences and leave it
at that.
