Spam on Usenet groups

What can be done to combat the spam on usenet groups like this one?
I'm assuming it's something people have tried to take before so is it
of such a huge volume / difficult to filter that a lot still gets
through?

Some of it always gets through, no matter how you filter. Just adjust
the rules whenever necessary. Here are some of the downscoring rules I
currently use for this group (an excerpt from an active gnus scorefile):

("subject"
("Urgent" -10 733889 s)
(" shoe " -1000 733889 s)
(" girls " -1000 733886 s)
(" Money " -100 733888 s)
("pharmacy" -1000 733889 s)
(" prescription" -1000 733889 s)
("Cheap " -1000 733892 s)
("Purchase " -1000 733889 s)
("Buy " -100 733889 s)
("Free " -20 733892 s)
("trade" -1000 733891 s)
("Discount" -1000 733891 s)
("payment" -1000 733892 s)
("paypal" -100 733892 s)
("wholesale" -1000 733892 s))
("from"
("hot " -1000 733892 s)
("<shoes" -1000 733892 s)
("cherry" -1000 733892 s)
(" shoes " -1000 733889 s)
("iloveyou" -1000 733892 s)
("Naeem " -1000 733889 s)
("Ministr" -1000 nil s)
("trade" -1000 733891 s)

Nothing, if you must use Google groups. If you have access to a news
server (there are several that are free or very cheap) you can use a
news reader. That will enable you to filter messages. I use Forte
Agent <http://www.forteinc.com/> (Windows only) and I get almost no
spam in this news group.

And I get absolutely zero spam in this news group, much because I filter
all from Google groups out.

I've been blissfully all but unaware of spam since I switched to a
usenet supplier that does filtering. (See the headers of this message if
you want to find out which one I use.) It's not free, but the cost is
negligible (10 Euro per year). There must be other usenet suppliers that
also do filtering.

Also, some news servers filter spam themselves. I use eternal-september
(free), and see far less spam then when I used my ISP's (former) Usenet
service.

Same here - except that I use the Pan newsreader, which also has decent
filtering capabilities. Not as good as Agent, but good enough: it can
filter by author or by thread.

You can miss on topic posts that way.

I think it is more in the spirit of usenet to see unwanted
spam than to miss relevant posts.

If you just ignore it, then the time wasted is a lot less
than the time you can spend trying to avoid seeing it.

Same here. Google is pretty much the only spammer on Usenet, and it's
because they "use the algorithm" rather than actually support their
products.

Some groups have about 100 real posts a day and several hundred Google
spams a day.
